A toast can quickly turn into a small disaster when a few drops of wine land on your clothes. Don’t panic — it’s not the end for your favorite outfit! Here at Cheir’a Lisboa, a self-service laundromat in Lisbon, we understand these little accidents and we’re here to help. In this article, we’ll show you how to remove wine stains from clothes easily and effectively, even at home.
1. Act fast — time is your enemy
The longer the wine stays on the fabric, the harder it will be to remove. As soon as it happens:
Grab a clean cloth or some paper towel.
Gently blot the stain to absorb as much wine as possible.
Avoid rubbing, as it can spread the stain deeper into the fibers.
2. Cold water is your best friend
Next, take the piece to the sink and:
Turn the fabric inside out.
Run cold water through the stained area for 30 to 60 seconds.
Cold water helps push the wine out of the fibers and prevents it from setting.
3. Use salt or white vinegar (quick fix)
If you’re out and can’t wash the item right away, cover the stain with coarse salt. It will absorb some of the wine before the fabric holds it in.At home, you can apply white vinegar directly on the stain to neutralize the pigment from red wine.Let it sit for a few minutes before moving to the next step.
4. Apply mild soap or dish detergent
Use a neutral soap or clear dishwashing liquid:
Apply a small amount directly on the stain.
Rub gently with your fingers or a soft brush.
Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
This helps break down the wine molecules and makes washing more effective.
5. Wash as usual (at home or with us)
Now it’s time to wash:
Use warm water in the machine (always check the care label).
At Cheir’a Lisboa, simply select the recommended program. Detergent is included, and our machines take care of the rest.
6. Check before drying
Only dry the item once the stain is completely gone. The heat from a dryer can set the stain permanently. If you still see traces of wine, repeat the previous steps before drying.
Extra tip for old wine stains
If the stain is dry or old, try this homemade mix:
1 tablespoon of baking soda
2 tablespoons of warm water
Apply to the stain, let it sit for 10 minutes, then wash normally.Baking soda helps lift deeper residues and restores the fabric’s original look.
At Cheir’a Lisboa, we make laundry easy, quick, and stress-free. Our modern machines, included detergent, and clean, welcoming space make all the difference.
